September 2009
Here we are again at Harrowgate for the finals of the National Champions of GB in the 1st section. Competing against the top 16 bands in the country.
It was not to be our day, we did not really perform to our potential, so as a result we were given only 15th place. We were naturally very disappointed but we remain upbeat and will learn from this as we prepare for our next year in the top section. |
September 2009.
The evening before the contest we had our annual awards dinner, but this year we hired a local community centre and the dinner was prepared by Lisa's mom and dad, Leda and Frank, and what a brilliant job they did, so a giant thank you to them both.
The awards were chosen by our MD, Dai Maplestone; he awarded Lisa Jenks as the player of the year and to the most improved player of the year to Claire Stone; so congrats to them both for their hard work and commitment to the band. For the first time this year members of the band were asked to vote for their Bands person of the year; the vote was given to our principle cornet and very hard working secretary Lisa Jenks, so once again congratulations to Lisa. |
September 2009
We decided to compete at Wychavon Festival of Brass at Droitwich, in the 1st section. We were awarded 2nd place. This was an entertainment contest with an own choice programme of 20 minutes, but we went over time and were deducted penalty points. This meant that had we not gone over we would have won!

June 2009
Saturday June 27th was our annual concert at Netherton Art Center where we put on a concert with a "difference". Following our recent successes in the contest
field, there was an inspired idea to do a concert to celebrate, and an arrangement for band of a number of "big band" swing tunes entitled "Swing When Your 'e Winning"
was chosen as the basis for the concert theme. We decided we would do the entire second half based on swing numbers, an to replicate the authenticity we set out
the band seating in the manner of the "big band" era. This was a risky plan; but it worked, we had a great time and from the feedback we received so to did the audience.
A big thanks go to our second Horn Claire Stone for her design of the stands and the programme. But thanks are due to many of our supporters who did a great deal
to make this concert such a success .
Our next major event is at the Telford
Festival of Brass on July 18th where
we will be doing an afternoon
performance, and also at the
evening Gala Concert.
After that it all hand on deck as we
prepare for Harrogate with
Gilbert Vinter's Triumphant Rhapsody |
May 2009
Saturday night 27th May, the band held a quiz night to help raise funds for Harrogate. Lisa's mom and dad did most of the work with Frank organizing the quiz
and Leda doing the food. We had a great night with Dave Jenks our drummer leading the winning team with an astonishing 85 points out of 105.
£300 was raised for the funds so a big thank you to Lisa, Leda, Frank and Janet for all their hard work in putting on this event. |
May 2009
We attended the Buxton spring contest, the first time here since 2002. Because of preparation time , or lack of it, we chose to play Eric Ball's Resurgam again,
this time however, we were up against much stiffer opposition than at Leamington. We put on a fine performance and were awarded 3rd place. We had to do
a bit of shuffling around as our solo horn was away so the lower horns were promoted for the day and did a superb job lead by Becky Williams on solo.
We also had a few deps to cover other absentees, so thanks to them all. We now start work on our next major event which is our own summer concert at
Netherton Art Centre on June 27th where we look forward to another sell out. |
March 2009
What a start to our year, West Midland Area Champions at only the second time in the first section. The test piece PENTACLE by Graham Cole proved
a very demanding challenge, but under the inspired leadership of our musical director Dai Maplestone, the band rose to the challenge to play a superb performance
to earn a well deserved first place at Bedworth Civic Hall on Saturday 14th March. It was a tremendous team performance which earned a standing applause from
the composer of the piece Graham Cole. We also owe our win in no small terms to our friends at the Cradley Heath Salvation Army; for a few years now we have
been doing a "run out" of the test piece at a concert at the Army Citadel a couple of weeks before the contest. Although we still had a lot of preparation time for
the contest, this "run out" provided a valuable basis on which to continue our preparation.
We will now be going to Harrogate in September for the National Finals (again) and next year we will be promoted to the Championship Section; watch out Black Dyke.
Only kidding, but who knows, the band has exceeded all expectations up till now, so lets hope we can continue with success.

December 2008
We finished off the year with several concerts, our favourite being with our friends and supporters at the Cradley Heath Salvation Army, we treated the
audience to Resurgam which is a favourite piece in the SA as it was composed by Eric Ball who was a staunch salvationist himself.
We thank all our band members and supporters who helped with our carol playing over the christmas period where we raised about
£800 for the band funds.----- well done everyone. |

Leamington 2008
Following our disappointment at Harrogate and the fact that we were unable to go to Pontins, we were determined to attend the WMBBA contest
at Leamington. We chose as our test piece, the very moving and evocative piece by Eric Ball, "Resurgam" which means "I shall rise again", we felt this
quite apt for Phoenix . Whilst there was a relatively small field, we played well off No 1 draw and the adjudicator, Major Peter Parkes, gave us first
place with 192 points and a clear 2 points more than the second band. Our principle cornet Lisa Jenks won the prizw for the best soloist, so well done Lisa.
We are now looking forward to consolidating our place in the first section in 2009.

Leaving this October 2008
Were sad to announce that Sara Oberland is leaving our ranks, Sara has only been with the band a short while, but has been an asset on
second cornet whilst she's been here. Sara and her husband are going to live in Dublin, so we wish them all the best for the future.
Ironically their new house name is "the Phoenix" and is near Phoenix park in Dublin. |
National Finals at Harrogate Sunday September 28th 2008
Last weekend saw us make another visit to Harrogate for the National Finals again, but this time in the 1st section, a much tougher task, we were
given 11th place out of a line up of 17 bands. This of course was a bit disappointing, but we didn't play our best on stage. It wasn't a bad performance
but not up to the standard we had been achieving in our last couple of rehearsals,,, well thats banding. we now look forward to the qualifiers next March
in Bedworth.
The Saturday night was a band dinner where the awards were made by our MD David Maplestone, As the most improved player of the year Dave selected
young Emilly Weaver on second cornet. As bandsman of the year Dave selected Geoff Pearson on solo trombone for his sterling leadership throughout
the year. Our solo cornet, Lisa Jenks received a special mention for her dedication and leadership in organizing all of the band events through the year.

Midland Area Championships Bedworth Saturday March 8th
Wow !!! another terrific result, 2nd place at our first attempt in the 1st section.
James Cook Circumnavigator was the toughest piece we've ever tackled,
but with the drive and interpretation of our mentor David Maplestone we seemed
to have given the adjudicators what they were looking for. This means we will
be going to the National finals at Harrogate in September for the third time in
just 4 years, what an achievement for a band with a short history of only 7 years.

Leamington Contest Sunday November 24th
With the heavy program of work leading up to the nationals, and a couple of concerts afterwards we had a short break from band.
This left us with just four rehearsals to work up a new test piece; we chose Tam "O" Shanters ride as some of the band had played it a
few years ago, we weren't even able to get a rehearsal room on the day for a warm up. We were pleased with our performance but like
everyone else we felt we could have done better so we were very pleased to be awarded 2nd place, this now means we have been in the
first three at every contest this year. With two important concerts to come this year, we are looking forward now to next year in the first section.
We give sincere thanks to our MD David Maplestone, "Dai" for his boundless enthusiasm and drive in getting where we are this year. |

Latest news – August 2007
As we approach the National Finals, the summer has seen new and old faces in the band room. We welcomed back Andy, Esther & Lauren who helped out on some park concerts and it is always great to have them back. Also helping out over the busy period was the ever talented Jay on Bb Bass. We thank him for his efforts and value his friendship to the band. |
New Signings
The band has signed 3 players over the Summer. Joining the cornet section are Neil Fishbourne and Emily Weaver.
Neil, former principal cornet of The Stourport Band will boost the front row as he sits 2nd man down. The bands conductor, Dave Maplestone
said ‘We are very fortunate to have another strong player join the team and he fits in well with the other members of the section'. He will make his
contest debut with the band at the Wychavon Festival of Brass.
The 2nd signing is Emily, a pupil of Soprano cornet player Jo. She is a talented player, who has just passed her grade 8 with distinction.
Phoenix is the first brass band she has played with and is enjoying it, she hopes to continue her new found banding career with the band.
Len Hazlehurst is the bands last signing who will join the bass section on Eb. Len is a very accomplished player who has played under
the baton of Dave many times before with Banks's Brewery Band and Stourport.
At this stage, the band would like to thank Colin, the bands principal Eb Bass, who has moved onto Bb to cover Ben Parkes.
Ben is unable to participate in the finals as due to some very untimely activities, their first child is due that weekend!!
We welcome them all to Team Phoenix. |

The summer started with the Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival.
Luckily we avoided the rain and played to a packed audience on the Saturday afternoon. It was a fantastic day, we made many new friends and the band gave a great performance, combining some music from our European Championships program and some new music we premiered in preparation for the Wychavon contest. Throw in a bit of choreography and it turned out to be a top performance On a serious note the festival raised £2000 for the Severn Hospice, and the band were proud to be a part of that.
Throughout the summer we have been busy in the local parks, entertaining the local community. There have been many memorable moments – Louise under the stage in Wolverhampton, Louise's inability to play Floral Dance, all accompanied by resident photographer John as he snapped the band for our new profile pages. John's hard work on the web site was also rewarded as our new site was awarded “Web site of the Month (July 2007) by leading brass band web site TheMouthpiece.com
Finally a big thank you to Geoff, who's annual BBQ raised funds for the band.
He was an excellent host and hopefully our out-of-tune renditions of “Happy Birthday”
didn't spoil the moment! Jacket potato anyone?
The next few months are the busiest of the year – the National Finals, Pontins and more but please come along and see the band at the Wychavon Entertainment Festival on Sunday 16 th September in the Public Hall, Evesham. |

European Championships in May 2007The last few months have seen momentous achievements by the band, but none more so than our appearance at the European Brass Band Championships. Having received an invitation in April from the BFBB to compete, the race was on to represent England in the B-Section to the best of our abilities. We had to perform a 30 minute own choice program of music that included the challenging European test piece “The Drop” by Simon Dobson (pictured). The last time the band had performed work by this composer, we were winning the Midlands 4 th section title with “Lydian Pictures”.
Our program was completed with “Prelude on Tallis”,
“The Lark in the Clear Air”, “Mid All The Traffic” and
“Shine as the Light”. Confidence was high given our regionals title,
and we weren't going to let negative press get us down.
Whether certain web sites agreed with our inclusion, or were using
us to attack the BFBB, the point was we had been specifically chosen, and who is ever going to turn down the chance to play at Symphony Hall for their country?
On the day itself excitement was at fever pitch, and the feeling of walking out on stage to a rapturous welcome will stay with us forever – four years ago we were in the 4 th section, so you have to make the most of these things! Dai was delighted with our performance, and I'm sure the whole band would agree that Emma's performance in her solo was mesmerising – the audience reaction seemed to confirm it! Special congratulations to our young horn trio for not being overawed by it all, and thanks to Rich Snape for standing in for Carl.
A fantastic day was topped off by a second place finish – an incredible result, and thanks for the reception Birmingham , it was a fantastic feeling to have that recognition and to rub shoulders with the “big boys” of the brass band world, Dobson himself told us that he thought we had put in a “fantastic” performance of his work. I don't think it really sank in until we were announced as “International award winning” at a concert a few days later. Back to reality I suppose, but thanks to the whole band, Dai and the supporters for the memories of that day. Go Team Phoenix !!!!

“Carnival” time as Phoenix celebrate hat-trick!
And so the streak goes on! 4th section winners 2003, 3rd section winners 2005 and now 2nd section winners 2007! – bring on 2008! Seriously though, months of hard work paid off as Phoenix were crowned the Midland Regional Area Second Section Champion Band at Burton in March. Helen Perkin's Carnival presented us with a real musical challenge, all about sound and style – one which suited us to the ground. We put in a confident performance on stage, led by great work from Jo and Lisa in the second movement especially. Captain Geoff and “Team Trombone” had a good day, and Colin and the basses gave us a good foundation. Even the percussion was described by Simone Rebello as “effective”. Thanks to Dai for his months of encouragement and hard work, and well done to the band! Harrogate here we come – again!
Appointment of new MD- Spring 2006
Phoenix West Midlands Brass are delighted to announce the appointment of David Maplestone as the band's new Musical Director. David has been working with the band for several months and recently led the band to second place in the second section of the Wychavon Festival of Brass. The Band were delighted with the new levels of performance achieved through working with David and are now looking forward to competing at Pontins in November.
The appointment coincides with the release of the band's debut CD “Joy, Peace and Happiness”, recorded earlier this year by Dolce productions.
A spokesman for the band said “We are thrilled with the appointment and the experience and skill David brings to the band room will be invaluable as we prepare for Pontins and next year's area. Having recruited several new players, the band is stronger than ever and we all feel David is the man to take us forward.”
Midlands Regional report…
A very early start, freezing cold weather and a long, long day. Was it worth it? Of course it was! Our latest trip to Burton has earned us our second title in three years, and Phoenix can now proudly call itself MIDLANDS REGION THIRD SECTION CHAMPIONS. Getting to grips with Tam O'Shanter's drunken exploits proved a challenge but every member of the band responded and worked really hard to ensure victory. The day started with a visit to the pub (for rehearsal purposes only!) and the band settled the nerves early. Not even Andy's dodgy kebab was going to hold us back! Another mid-morning rehearsal and we were soon on stage for a performance on a number 9 draw (our new lucky number). Although a few slips were noticeable the sound and quality of the band was awesome at times – special praise needs to go to some of the soloists on the day – Vicki (Euphonium), Lisa (Cornet), Emma (Flugel) and Lou (Baritone) all received praise from John Berryman (our new favourite adjudicator). A big band congratulations also to Bryan and Lauren who showed few nerves on their Burton debuts. However, this was a day for the whole band to celebrate, our fearless leader DBR seemed to be impressed with the way we really went for it on stage and celebrations went on long into the afternoon. It was not only Tam who made his way home in a drunken manner (though I won't mention any names Lisa and Lou!)
Dai celebrates
